About the Building Phase of the Capital Campaign:

After embarking upon a successful Capital Campaign in 2008, Holy Comforter has entered the Building Phase of its Forward in Faith Campaign. We have moved Forward in Faith despite these challenging economic times and have received some unexpected blessings as a result. The General Contractor bids we received were less costly than expected, enabling us to plan a lower-level second floor for a portion of the New Building and to make enhancements in other areas. The Building Phase promises to bring exciting, and much-needed, transformation to our physical space.
This transformation will enable us to increase our Outreach activities, enhance our worship with improved organ music, and expand our Christian Education offerings. This project could not be more timely, as the Charlotte Observer reported on June 22 that the number of homeless people in Mecklenburg County rose to 6,550, while some charities that serve this population are facing budget cuts of as much as 50 percent.
In addition, the Building Phase will provide office space for clergy and staff, storage areas, and meeting facilities. For more information, or to learn how you can be a part of this wonderful project, please contact Gail and Tom at fennimor@vol.com.
Here are some highlights of the Building Phase of the Capital Campaign:
  • We have secured a $2 million construction loan and are moving forward with the Building Phase of our plans.
  • The 40-year-old YAC was demolished July 15th and is being replaced with a 12,000+ square foot building, containing offices, classrooms, and meeting space.
  • Our Loaves & Fishes pantry is the original, and most active, pantry in the city. Its space originally was slated to grow by a much-needed 78%, and recent changes will increase that even more, providing additional critical resources to serve hungry families in the Charlotte area.
  • Showers and laundry facilities will be provided for our Room in the Inn guests.
  • The 37-year old organ will be repaired and updated, including pipe restoration and new electronics. The console will be relocated, for better sound and accessibility.  The organ and pipes are scheduled to leave the premises for repairs in Spring 2010.
  • Restrooms in the parish house will be renovated and made wheelchair accessible.
  • The lobby, gift shop, library, and clergy vesting areas will be expanded and relocated. Storage space will be created, as well as a parlor for wedding parties and funerals.
  • There will be two additional rooms in the parish house decorated to more appropriately serve our youth.
  • Christian Education classrooms for young children will located below the office wing of the New Building which will allow them to open onto the Weekday School playground.

  • Current architectural floor plans and renderings are posted in the hallway leading to the sanctuary. Click here to view the front and rear elevation of the main levelClick here to view the floor plan for the main level. Click here to view the floor plan for the lower level.
Construction Alert!

We encourage everyone to view the construction progress from a safe spot.
To view the progress, walk down the front hallway and step out into the balcony. From there, you'll be able to see everything that's being done without getting mud on your shoes!

On Sunday, April 11th, Bishop Curry took the time to tour the building and see its progress during his visit to Holy Comforter. One of the photos that Tom Cooke took during that tour is below. You can view all the photos of the tour by clicking this link.
